When you move from Southern California to Pittsburg, Kansas, you know the questions are coming. In fact, they’re coming a lot. Like many, many times.
Why Pittsburg? Why Kansas? Huh?
Gloria Montes has perfected her response: Why not?
“Pittsburg has allowed me to earn my bachelors’s degree, purchase a house, and manage a business,” she said. “I believe Pittsburg is the perfect place for our family, values, and now our business.”
Ok, that’s awesome. Totally get that. But how does someone in Los Angeles even hear of Pittsburg, Kansas?
“I had no idea Pittsburg existed,” Montes said. “My cousin, Maritza, convinced me to start a new journey in this little town. Growing up in Los Angeles, I always knew I wanted to move out and make a name for myself, and I am grateful for the opportunity Pittsburg has given me.”

Montes is the owner of Montes Roofing & Construction, which she founded in 2019. The business provides a variety of commercial and residential services, such as roofing, painting, and drywall installation and repair.
The inspiration for the business was Gloria’s husband, Edgardo “JR” Montes.
“In February of 2019 my husband asked me if I was willing to learn commercial roofing and construction,” she said. “Before I could answer, he continued to say, ‘I believe in you. We will not fail. It’s our name, we have to be detail-oriented and passionate.’ I decided to take a leap of faith.”
Montes said she’s proud that her company is a Kansas certified Woman and Minority Owned business, and she’s grateful that Pittsburg is such a welcoming community.
“I love to see Pittsburg embracing diversity, and being supportive of women entrepreneurs,” she said. “I’m glad to know my husband and I made the right choice to move to Pittsburg.”
She also loves seeing the growth and progress in the city.
“I visited Pittsburg in January of 2006, and housing and daycares were limited,” she said. “I can see the growth. Pittsburg is thriving.”
